To make sure your body is recovering and healing as expected after childbirth, it is recommended to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist about six weeks after delivery. This is in addition to appointments at the well-baby clinic (Tipat Halav), where you will also be asked about your own health.
For the visit, it is important to bring with you all hospital documentation, including your discharge letter, delivery and hospitalization summary, and any other documents you received or that may be relevant. Be sure to update your doctor about any complications or procedures that took place during the delivery and/or hospitalization, as well as any medical issues you experienced.
During the appointment:
- You will talk about the delivery and about your overall health and how you are feeling.
- A vaginal examination will be performed to check the healing of tears or stitches.
- Many doctors will perform an ultrasound to ensure the uterus is clear.
- You may be offered a Pap test (cervical smear) if you have not had one recently. The recommendation is to have this test once every three years between the ages of 25 and 65 for early detection of lesions.
- You will receive a referral for a complete blood count to check your iron levels.
- You will receive counseling and guidance regarding sexual activity and contraception. If you are considering an intrauterine device (IUD), it is recommended to speak with your doctor before the appointment, request a prescription, and bring the device with you.
- It is recommended to continue taking iron supplements until you receive your blood test results or until you are given different instructions by your doctor.
